First Time Towing courses

So, you’ve purchased your first caravan, camper or boat trailer and want to hit the road as soon as possible. But that two-hour handover with the seller didn’t really answer all your questions. Or, it was too much to take in on the day.

First Time offers courses in safely towing caravans and trailers. Read on to learn more.

First Time Caravan Course

Cars towing caravans on a highway in Australia

The First Time Caravan Course runs for about four hours, starting and finishing at your nominated address. This way, we can offer advice on storage, powering your home battery system when the caravan isn’t being used and, most importantly, reversing it safely into your driveway after your holiday!

Read on to discover what the course covers.

Legal learnings

We'll talk through the legalities of towing a van, including things like maximum vehicle weight (GVM), vehicle compatibility (GCM), kerb weights and ball weights (things you really should know about your set-up before heading off on that big trip.)

Safety issues

We cover vital safety considerations like weight distribution, correcting van sway and brake set-up. We'll have a look at your specific set-up and discuss keeping you safe on the road.

Driving techniques

You'll learn the very best techniques for safe towing, reversing and the correct use of mirrors and reversing cameras. Importantly, also attaching and disconnecting your caravan safely.

First Time Trailer Towing

Do you, or your employees need to tow a trailer? Are you/they confident driving with it? Perhaps you need some peace of mind that the trailer is being towed correctly and safely. If so, the 90-minute First Time Trailer Towing Course is for you.

Our experienced trainers will talk through the considerations and responsibilities of towing a trailer, including turning points, overhang, safely negotiating turns and reversing.

Obstacles, reversing & parking

We head out with your vehicle and trailer setup. We'll discuss how to safely negotiate an obstacle and then, in a safe location, go through reversing the trailer straight, around turns and into parking spots or driveways.

Competency certificates

Clients who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Competency. For employers, this serves as assurance that your employee has met our strict criteria for using and reversing your trailer.
